In the 19th century, Kragujevac's kafanas were meeting places of social life where theatre plays were played, newspapers started, literary circles formed and people politically agitated.
Old kafanas, their names to be more precise, are a special landmark in space, but also in time and history of every town. Kragujevac is not an exemption to this, on the contrary. It is widely known that in the time of Turkish reign there were five inns and two stopping places for caravans, and in 1815. rebels christen a "Kneževa kafana" ("The kafana of the Duke" would be an English translation) which stands for the first Kragujevac's kafana while "Makedonija" ("Macedonia" in English) is considered to be the first town tavern.
So it happened until the transition years which marked the beginning of excruciating struggle for kafanas' survival when the wallets of the regular guests got more and more emptier, competition was stronger with the growing number of cafes, pizzerias, places for roasting meat, and betting houses, all of which recruited young potential "audience". But, as it often happens, the strongest ones remain, so whoever wishes to have that original kafana atmosphere in Kragujevac can drop by and have a treat at "Prva pomoć" (or "First Aid" in English), "Nostalgija" ("Nostalgia"), "Biblioteka kod Milutina" ("Library at Milutin's"), "Mortus" ("Dead Drunk")...
