Kafana Оrač (English explanation or translation: The Plowman)

'Orač' is one of the most famous kafanas in Niš, it is located not far from the Church of St. Panteleimon. Not big, with its 40-50 seats, it sets its guests into a good mood, both with its enterior as well as its service.

We apologise in advance for the poor data, but the owner, a 'meraklija', is simply hard to find in the morning, but even harder, in the afternoon hours.

The clientele is various, but it is usually occupied by company- people and businessmen, so in those cases, there is little space for the common people. In addition to this, reservation is desirable at every time of the day or week.

Where to start... the waiters are always courteous and at your service, ready to help with the choice of food and drinks. They are always in the mood to recommend what their choice would be, that is, the specialties that you cannot find on the menu. They are honestly good guys, but you shouldn't trust everything they say so try to avoid the sausages (which were our choice in this case), but you are free to try everything else on and especially 'out' the menu.

The portions are huge and often enough for more than two persons. There are no unusual specialties, but the food is very tasty and prepared in a special way this kafana is famous for.

Subjective observation: pay attention to the 'teleći medaljoni' ('veal medallions')... How very bad-mannered of us to skip 'meze' and rakija which we certainly shouldn't have done.

Local plum, quince, pear, grape and other rakijas, along with salads, should not be skipped as we did at the occasion in question.

Working hours are from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., but if you happen to be there after 11 p.m., you risk being forgotten inside the kafana and no one can save you. Round after round, it can last to morning hours.
